Kate Summerscale tells the story of Alma Fielding, a young woman in suburban London in 1938 who said that objects flew around her house, that apports appeared, and that a ghostly presence haunted her. Nandor Fodor, a psychical researcher who was also a psychoanalyst, investigated her claims and became absorbed in her case, looking for explanations in her past and her mind. Summerscale draws on his notes and on the press coverage of the time.
Readers who like true stories about the paranormal and interwar Britain will find a careful, curious account. It also interests those drawn to the history of psychoanalysis.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
