In 1920s England, Sarah Piper, a young woman struggling to make a living, takes a job with Alistair Gellis, a paranormal investigator, who needs an assistant to help him with a haunting in a farmhouse. The ghost is Maddy Clare, a young woman who died violently and who seems especially hostile to men. As Sarah and Gellis investigate, the case brings them into dangerous territory.
