Lauren comes home from a bad night out to discover a door in her flat that she has never seen before. Behind it is her husband, Michael, whom she has just kissed goodbye, and he is cheerful and slightly different. Each time she goes through the attic door, another version of her husband appears and the previous one vanishes, so she can swap one for another until she finds the right man. Holly Gramazio uses the premise to ask how much of a marriage depends on luck, what we want from a partner, and why the idea of a better option never stops being tempting.
Readers who like speculative romantic comedy, in the vein of Meg Mason or Matt Haig, will enjoy this funny, slightly melancholy debut.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
