About the book

Six Californians meet monthly for six months to read and talk about one Austen novel each. Jocelyn is a dog breeder who arranges the club to cheer up her friend Sylvia after her husband leaves. The members include Bernadette, Prudie, Allegra and Grigg, the only man in the group. As they discuss Austen, their own relationships, divorces and flirtations echo the books they read. Each section is devoted to one novel and one member's perspective.

Austen devotees will enjoy catching the references, but you need not know the novels well to follow it. A pleasant read for people interested in how books shape friendships and love lives, and for readers who like gentle comedies of manners set in the present.
