Anthony Peardew is an elderly writer who has spent decades collecting lost objects, such as a glove, a key and a child's toy, which he keeps at home with notes about where he found them. He does so in memory of his fiancée, who died after he lost a keepsake she had given him. Before he dies, he asks his assistant Laura to return the objects to their owners. Laura, who is lonely and recovering from an unhappy relationship, takes on the task, and the novel moves between the present and past, showing the stories behind lost things. Ruth Hogan writes it with gentle humor.
It is for readers who like warm, quirky novels about loss, second chances and unlikely friendships. If you enjoy low-key stories about kindness, it is comforting.
Inward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
