Margot Lee, a young Korean American woman in Los Angeles, comes home to find her mother, Mina, dead in her small apartment. Margot starts looking into her mother's past, and discovers that Mina had a life full of secrets, including friendships and a connection to the neighbourhood that she never shared. Nancy Jooyoun Kim alternates between Margot in the present and Mina's earlier years as an immigrant, from Korea to the United States, with all the work, loneliness and sacrifice it involved. The investigation shifts from a cold case to a search for understanding.
Readers who like novels about immigrant families, mothers and daughters, and how well we know our parents will find it moving. It is a quiet mystery that depends on empathy.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; an easy read.
