Samuel Andresen-Anderson, a disappointed English professor who is addicted to an online video game, sees his mother Faye on the news after decades of absence: she has been arrested for throwing gravel at a right-wing presidential candidate. A publisher demands he write a tell-all book about her, and Samuel begins digging into her past, which takes him to Norway, to the 1968 Chicago protests, and to the Nix, a Norwegian spirit that Faye once told him about. Nathan Hill moves among several decades and voices.
This is a long, funny novel for readers who like big American fiction with satire, family secrets, and social commentary. It also suits anyone who has felt stuck and curious about what shaped their parents.
Deep, inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
