This retelling of the Mahabharata is narrated by Panchaali, also called Draupadi, who emerges from a sacrificial fire to marry the five Pandava brothers. She grows up in her father's palace, learns about her destiny from a sage, and builds a magical palace in Indraprastha. Her secret attraction to Karna and her close friendship with Krishna shape her choices. She is humiliated in the dice game, and the war that follows brings devastation to those she loves.
An approachable path into the epic for readers who know little of it, and a fresh take for those who know it well. It appeals to anyone who wants a feminine perspective on a story of war, loyalty and fate.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
