A young man traveling through New England in 1927 visits the decaying port of Innsmouth, Massachusetts, because he is curious about the town's bad reputation. Lovecraft's narrator learns from an old drunk named Zadok Allen about Captain Obed Marsh, who brought back a strange gold and a pact with undersea creatures called the Deep Ones. The townspeople have an odd look and an odd walk, and the narrator is pursued through the night. The story slowly reveals a secret about his own family, and it ends on a reveal.
This novella is for readers of classic horror and anyone curious about the Cthulhu mythos. It is a good place to start with Lovecraft, as it has a strong atmosphere, a clear plot and a famous final twist.
