Sonny Lofthus has spent twelve years in an Oslo prison, taking the blame for crimes and becoming a heroin addict while the inmates make him a sort of confessor. When he learns the truth about his policeman father's suicide, he escapes and begins hunting the people responsible. Jo Nesbø sets the story in a city run by a corrupt police force, criminal gang leaders and a drug lord known as the Twin. A weary detective, Simon Kefas, chases Sonny while uncovering how deep the corruption goes.
Crime readers who like dark Nordic thrillers with a revenge plot will find a fast, bleak story. It is a standalone book, so you do not need to know Nesbø's Harry Hole series to follow it.
Practical, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Escapist Adventurer. Which reader are you?
