Daisy Goodwill Flett is born in 1905 in a Manitoba limestone quarry town, her mother dying in childbirth without knowing she was pregnant. The book follows Daisy from childhood in Winnipeg through two marriages, widowhood, a career writing a gardening column, and old age. It is told as her autobiography, but Daisy is a strangely absent narrator, with gaps, third-person passages and invented family letters.
Readers who enjoy literary novels about ordinary lives and the difficulty of knowing anyone, even ourselves, will find it rewarding. It suits those who like formal experiments that stay readable and emotionally clear.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Mindful Reader. Which reader are you?
