In 1968, Lynnie, a young woman with a developmental disability, lives in a Pennsylvania institution called the School. She escapes with Homer, a deaf man who does not speak, and the two hide in a farmhouse owned by Martha, an elderly widow. Lynnie has a baby, and the baby remains with Martha when the authorities return and take Lynnie and Homer away. Rachel Simon follows the three through the decades, as Lynnie and Homer try to find each other, and Martha raises the child, whom she calls Beautiful Girl. The novel shows the treatment of disabled people in the past.
It suits readers who like emotional fiction about love and family. People interested in disability rights will find the setting thought-provoking.
