Frank Machianno, known as Frankie Machine, is sixty and works as a bait shop owner in San Diego. In his earlier life he was a mob hitman who worked for the local family. Now he spends mornings surfing with his old friends and tries to stay out of the past. When a former associate dies, someone puts out a contract on his own life, and Frankie must work out who wants him dead and why, drawing on the old skills he thought he'd left behind.
Fans of Don Winslow's crime fiction and California noir will enjoy the surf setting and the sense of an older man forced back into trouble. A fast read with a lot of local color.
Practical, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
