Bradley Chalkers is the worst kid in fifth grade, a liar and bully who sits alone in the back of the class and has no friends. When a new boy, Jeff Fishkin, arrives and shows interest in him, and the school counselor, Carla Davis, starts working with him, Bradley slowly begins to change. Louis Sachar's story shows a child hiding behind bad behavior, and it is told with humor, short chapters and a lot of sympathy. The plot moves to a point where Bradley has to decide who he wants to be.
Readers around ages eight to twelve, and adults who remember being the odd one out, will enjoy this warm, funny story.
Practical and clear-cut; an easy read.
