In 1863 London, Bridie Devine is a female detective, brusque and skilled, who is hired to find a kidnapped girl named Christabel Berwick, a child who is not like others and who may have supernatural abilities. Bridie's search takes her into the world of anatomists, collectors of curiosities and underground ports of the city, with the help of her housemaid and a ghost named Ruby who follows her. Jess Kidd mixes historical detail with folklore, humor and dark gothic atmosphere.
Readers who enjoy Victorian mysteries with a magical edge and strong characters will find this an offbeat, lively adventure.
