About the book

Hearing the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" on an airplane, thirty-seven-year-old Toru Watanabe remembers himself as a student in 1960s Tokyo. His best friend Kizuki has died by suicide, and Toru gravitates toward Kizuki's girlfriend, Naoko, fragile and withdrawn, now living in a remote retreat. At the same time he befriends Midori, an energetic girl who teases him. He has to decide between the devotion he owes the past and the future available with someone alive. The setting includes student protests, bars, and sparse dorm life.

A good pick for readers who like Murakami's tender side, and for those who want a novel about young love and mental illness without dramatics.
