About the book

Clay Jensen comes home from school one day to find a box of cassette tapes with his name on it, recorded by Hannah Baker, a classmate who died by suicide two weeks earlier. On the tapes she names thirteen people who played a part in her decision, with instructions to pass the tapes on. Clay listens through the night as he walks around town, visiting the places she mentions, while wondering what he did to deserve a spot on the list. The novel alternates between Hannah's recorded voice and Clay's reactions.

Readers should know the subject is hard. It speaks to older teens and adults about how small actions affect others, and includes a clear message to reach out when someone is struggling.
