About the book

Cole Matthews, fifteen, is a violent young offender who has been sentenced to a Native-inspired form of justice called Circle Justice. Instead of prison, he is sent alone to a remote island in Alaska, where he is attacked by a white Spirit Bear. This event forces him to face what he has done, and with the help of a probation officer and a Tlingit elder, he begins to change and to take responsibility for the pain he has caused.

It is a good fit for middle-grade and teen readers who like survival stories with a moral dimension. It suits classrooms and families looking for a novel about anger, justice and forgiveness.
