The village of Mano Majra lies on the border of India and Pakistan, and in the summer of 1947 it is a peaceful place where Sikhs and Muslims have always lived together. As the Partition tears the region apart, a train full of corpses arrives from Pakistan, and then a murder takes place. Jugga, a Sikh criminal, is in love with a Muslim girl, Nooran, and a local magistrate has the power to decide what to do about the Muslim villagers. Singh's concise narrative shows how fear overcomes neighbourly love and how a single act of courage might change things.
Readers who want to understand Partition through a human story will find it a good place to begin.
Thought-provoking; a moderate read.
