About the book

In the summer of 1947, as the Partition of India divides the subcontinent, the village of Mano Majra on the border of Punjab has lived with Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims in harmony. Then trains begin to arrive from Pakistan carrying the dead. A local moneylender is murdered, a young Sikh man, Jugga, and a Muslim girl, Nooran, are in love, and a magistrate, Hukum Chand, and a social worker, Iqbal, are caught up in the events. The village must decide whether to protect its Muslim neighbours as the violence grows.

A short, vivid novel on Partition for readers who want a human-scale view of the event.
