Leon Uris tells the story of Ireland's struggle for independence through Conor Larkin, a Catholic boy from a poor family in Ulster who grows up in the late nineteenth century. Conor leaves his home village for the hills of Donegal, becomes a laborer and a rebel, and later is involved in the Irish revolutionary movement. The book also follows Protestant families who live in the north, showing sectarian tensions and the history that led to the Easter Rising and the partition. Uris mixes historical events with a love story and adventure.
Readers who like long, sweeping historical fiction will find a detailed saga about the roots of the Irish conflict.
Clear-cut; a moderate read.
