About the book

A narrator, staying at a pension on the French Riviera before the First World War, recalls the scandal of a married woman who fled with a young man she had known for a single day. Years later, an elderly Englishwoman, Mrs C, tells him the whole story, in the hope of getting some understanding at last. She had watched a young gambler at the roulette tables at Monte Carlo, noticed only his hands, and tried to save him. Stefan Zweig builds the story around the way passion can overpower reason within a single day.

It is for readers who like fast, psychologically sharp novellas where a few hours change everything. You finish it understanding why Zweig remains one of the best-known Austrian writers of the early twentieth century.
