Violent Ends is a novel told in seventeen voices, each written by a different young adult author, about Kirby Matheson, a teenager who carried out a shooting at his high school. The chapters come from people who knew him, such as friends, classmates, and family members, and they gradually build a portrait of a boy who was complicated and who was shaped by cruelty and neglect. Shaun David Hutchinson, who organized the project, wrote the introduction and the structure. The aim is to ask what could have been noticed and what each person did or failed to do.
It is meant for older teens and adults who want a serious look at school violence from many angles. It offers a thoughtful, uncomfortable read and does not provide easy answers.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; an easy read.
