Ivy Lin grew up in Chinese immigrant poverty in suburban America, raised by a mother who steals and a grandmother who pushes her to succeed. As a child she is obsessed with a wealthy boy, Gideon Speyer, and as an adult she reenters his life in New York. Her plan to win him is complicated by her past and by her feelings for an old friend, Roux. The novel follows her ambitions and the lies she tells to belong.
It will appeal to those who like psychological character studies with a prickly, morally murky heroine. It also addresses class and immigration, and the cost of a double life.
Balanced in tone; an easy read.
