Yerma

About the book

Yerma is a young Spanish woman in rural Andalusia who wants a child above everything, and cannot conceive. Her husband Juan, a hard-working and cold man, does not share her desire and spends his days in the fields. As the years pass, she turns to the village women and an older woman who knows folk remedies, while pressure from neighbors and her own obsession grow. Federico García Lorca wrote this tragedy in verse and prose, with songs and a chorus of washerwomen, ending in a terrible act.

It suits readers of theater and Spanish literature who like emotionally intense drama. It is short and often performed.
