Naomi Soledad León Outlaw lives with her little brother Owen, who has physical disabilities, and her grandmother, known as Gram, in a trailer park in California. When their mother Skyla, who left years ago, returns and tries to claim Naomi, the family faces the possibility of separation. Gram takes them to Oaxaca, Mexico, to find Naomi's father, and Naomi enters a radish-carving contest. Pam Muñoz Ryan tells the story with warmth, giving Naomi a strong voice as she finds out about her identity and family.
It's a good middle-grade novel for readers aged nine to twelve, about courage and belonging. Parents and teachers will find it a useful way to talk about family structures and names.
Practical and clear-cut; an easy read.
