Five years after the car accident that killed her husband, Feyi Adekola is finally re-entering the dating scene in Brooklyn. Her life shifts when a chance encounter at a party leads to a lavish summer trip to a tropical island, where she is commissioned to create art for a high-profile exhibition. While she initially pursues a romance with Nasir, she finds herself drawn into a forbidden, visceral attraction to his father, Alim, a celebrity chef. The narrative follows their clandestine interactions as they navigate mutual grief and the social fallout of their connection.
This book serves readers who want stories about the messy reality of healing from trauma and the complications of unconventional desire. It appeals to those looking for a romance that prioritizes bodily autonomy and the refusal to live a life limited by sorrow. Readers walk away with a depiction of how pleasure and grief coexist, focusing on a protagonist who chooses her own happiness even when it contradicts social expectations or risks family stability.
