Violette Toussaint is the caretaker of a cemetery in a small town in Burgundy. She lives in a little house on the grounds, tends the graves and the flowers, makes coffee for mourners, and listens to everyone's stories. One day, a police officer named Julien Seul arrives with the ashes of his dead mother and a request to scatter them next to a stranger's grave, which sets in motion a secret. Valerie Perrin alternates between Violette's present and her past, revealing a childhood in foster care, a love story, and a tragedy that explains why she stays among the dead.
It suits readers who like warm, melancholic, character-driven French fiction. Those who enjoy stories about quiet lives and unexpected connections will find it moving.
