Macabéa is a nineteen-year-old typist from Brazil's impoverished northeast, living in a rented room in Rio de Janeiro. She is poorly educated, plain, always hungry, and lives on Coca-Cola and hot dogs while dreaming of nothing in particular. The narrator, a fictional writer named Rodrigo S.M., keeps interrupting to reflect on why he is telling her story and how hard it is to write about someone so unnoticed. Her brief romance with a boyfriend, Olímpico, and a visit to a fortune teller lead to a startling ending.
This short last novel by Clarice Lispector is for readers who like experimental fiction with a social conscience. It rewards slow reading and suits those who want to see how a writer can give a voice to the invisible.
Deep, inward-looking and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Wisdom Collector. Which reader are you?
