Joana is a girl whom people find strange. As a child, she is sharp-tongued and imaginative, and she is left an orphan after her mother's death and the loss of her father. Clarice Lispector follows her through school, marriage to Otávio, and her discontent with ordinary life, and her uneasy rivalry with Lídia, the woman Otávio is involved with. The novel is told in fragments, moving between memories and present events, with a poetic stream of thought that focuses on her sensations rather than the plot. It was Lispector's first book, published when she was in her twenties.
It suits readers who are curious about Brazilian modernism and who enjoy introspective, lyrical writing. Those new to Lispector will find in it the style that she developed later.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative, open-ended and thought-provoking; a demanding read.
