Susie Salmon, fourteen, is murdered in 1973 by her neighbor George Harvey in a cornfield near her Pennsylvania home. From her own version of heaven she watches her family fall apart and heal: her father Jack's obsession with finding the killer, her mother Abigail's flight, her sister Lindsey's investigation and her brother Buckley's growing up. The living, including the boy Ray Singh and the outsider Ruth Connors, are drawn into a story that Susie follows but cannot change.
A good match for readers who want a family drama about grief with a crime at its center. You come away with a sense of how loss reshapes people and how love continues.
Inward-looking and contemplative; a moderate read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
