Amanda, a young woman from the South, and her husband John Paul Ziller open a roadside zoo and hot-dog stand in the state of Washington, called Captain Ahab's Discount Zoo. Their staff include a pair of mystics and former monks, and a group of misfits join them. After a discovery of an apparent relic of Jesus is made, the Vatican and the FBI take notice and things escalate into chaos. Robbins narrates with wordplay, jokes and philosophy in a flamboyant style.
A counterculture comic novel from the early seventies for readers who like whimsical satire on religion and American life. It has an irreverent charm that has found its readers.
Open-ended; a moderate read.
