About the book

Los Angeles in 1970. Larry "Doc" Sportello, a hippie private detective, is visited by his ex-girlfriend Shasta Fay, who asks him to help prevent a plot against her new lover, a real estate developer. Doc follows a trail of missing persons, a saxophonist who is supposed to be dead, a mysterious organization called the Golden Fang, and cops, all while smoking a great deal of marijuana. The plot is deliberately tangled and comic.

Pynchon fans and newcomers who like drug-fuelled noir with sharp period detail will find it easier than his large novels. It suits those who like atmosphere and jokes more than a tidy solution.
