Shankar, a young Bengali man who has just finished school, leaves his village for a job with a jute company in Africa, where he becomes fascinated by the wilderness. He meets a Portuguese adventurer, Diego Alvarez, and joins him in an expedition into the African wilds toward the legendary mountain of the moon in search of a diamond mine. On the way, they face lions, snakes, a creature called the Bunyip and the dangers of thirst. Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay wrote the novel without having visited Africa, drawing on explorers' accounts.
