Lucy Honeychurch, a young Englishwoman, travels to Florence with her cousin and chaperone Charlotte Bartlett. At the Pension Bertolini, they are disappointed to have rooms with no view of the Arno, until the Emersons, a father and son, offer to swap. The younger Emerson, George, is intense and unconventional, and he kisses Lucy in a field of violets. Back in England, Lucy gets engaged to the refined and snobbish Cecil Vyse, but George turns up again as a neighbor. E.M. Forster's 1908 novel is a comedy about social convention, honesty and passion, set among Edwardian tourists and country society.
It is a good read for those who like witty, gentle social comedy and love stories that value truth over propriety. Fans of period drama will recognize the setting and enjoy Forster's irony.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
