About the book

Caden Bosch is a bright teenager who is slipping into mental illness. In one thread he lives a normal life, with school, family and a sketchbook, though paranoia is taking over. In the other he is a crew member on a ship headed to the Challenger Deep, the deepest point in the ocean, under a captain who may not be sane. The two threads blend as his condition worsens and he enters treatment. Shusterman based the story on his own son's experience, and his son drew the illustrations.

Teen and adult readers who want an honest, imaginative portrait of schizophrenia will find it moving and clear. It conveys what it feels like when reality loosens.

Reading profile

Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
