In a small Mississippi town, two boys grew up on opposite sides of a divide: Larry Ott, a white loner whose father owned a garage, and Silas Jones, a Black boy who became friends with him. After a date, a girl vanished in 1982 and Larry, never charged, was shunned as a suspect for decades. Silas became a constable in the same town. When another girl disappears twenty-five years later, suspicion falls on Larry again, and Silas must face the past, and his own role in it. Tom Franklin uses the rural South as the setting for a slow-burning mystery.
Readers who like Southern crime fiction with strong characters and a focus on race, class and guilt will find a satisfying story. It is about how the same town can mean different things to two friends.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
