Ree Dolly is a sixteen-year-old girl living in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, taking care of her two younger brothers and her mentally ill mother. Her father, Jessup, a methamphetamine cook, has put up the family house as bond for a court appearance and then disappeared. If he does not show up, they will lose their home. Ree sets out to find him among her relatives, who are part of a clannish and dangerous drug community, and who do not want to talk. Daniel Woodrell writes in a spare, rhythmic style about poverty and loyalty.
Readers who like rural noir and strong young heroines will find a tense, unsentimental novel. It is a story about family obligation and the lengths one girl goes to protect her own.
Balanced in tone; a moderate read.
