Callie is a fourteen-year-old girl who has stopped speaking and is sent to Sea Pines, a residential treatment center for troubled girls, where she is being treated for cutting herself. She doesn't want to be there, and refuses to talk to the doctors. Meanwhile, she meets other girls, each with her own story, and they gradually help her. Her family is under pressure, as her brother is ill, and her mother is overwhelmed. The short novel is narrated in her sparse, honest voice.
A young adult novel for readers who want to understand self-harm and recovery. It suits teens and the adults who care for them, and offers an honest account of how people begin to open up.
Inward-looking and thought-provoking; an easy read.
Best for readers like The Empathetic Explorer. Which reader are you?
