About the book

The four Garcia sisters, Carla, Sandra, Yolanda and Sofia, flee the Dominican Republic with their parents in 1960, after their father's involvement in a plot against the dictator Trujillo. In New York, they must adapt to a new language and culture while their parents try to keep their old ways. The novel is told in reverse, starting in the present and moving back to the Dominican Republic, with each chapter showing a different sister and a different point of view, and it follows how they lose their accents and gain new ones.

A fine novel for readers interested in immigrant stories, family and identity in two cultures. Its structure is inventive.
