Tyler's father is hurt in an accident, and his Vermont farm is saved only when Mexican migrant workers arrive to help. Mari, the daughter of one of the workers, and Tyler become friends, and her family's undocumented status puts them at risk. Julia Alvarez tells the story in alternating voices, in a book that mixes letters, narrative, and the lives of people on both sides of the border.
It suits middle school readers and classrooms discussing immigration, farm labour, and empathy. The story is told with a gentle tone but does not hide the fear that hangs over families living without papers.
Balanced in tone; an easy read.
