Evan Hansen is a high school senior with severe social anxiety, whose therapist suggests he write himself letters of encouragement. One of those letters is found by Connor Murphy, a classmate who then dies by suicide, and Connor's grieving parents mistake it for a note written to Evan, believing the two were close friends. Evan does not correct them. As the story grows, he becomes part of the Murphy family, and a school memorial project goes viral. Val Emmich, with Steven Levenson and the songwriters of the stage musical, expands the story into novel form.
It is for readers, especially teens and parents, who loved the musical or who want a story about loneliness, social media, and the pressure to belong. It also raises questions about honesty and grief.
Inward-looking and clear-cut; an easy read.
