About the book

Ed Kennedy is a nineteen-year-old cab driver in a small Australian town, an underachiever who plays cards with his friends and is in love with his friend Audrey. One day, he stops a bank robbery by accident. Soon afterwards, an ace of diamonds arrives in his mail, with three addresses written on it. Ed goes to each place and discovers that he has to help those who live there, sometimes by kindness and sometimes by force. More cards follow, each with a different task, and he starts to wonder who is sending them and why. Markus Zusak mixes humor, odd characters and quiet emotional moments, with a surprising ending.

It is a good pick for teens and adults who like contemporary young adult fiction about ordinary people finding purpose. It reads quickly and leaves a warm impression.
