Cedric Errol is a seven-year-old American boy living in New York with his widowed mother, known as Dearest. One day a lawyer arrives to tell Cedric that he is the heir of the Earl of Dorincourt, a stern English nobleman, his grandfather, who refuses to accept the boy's American mother. Cedric travels to England, charms the household, the tenants and eventually the old man with his kindness and trust, while an imposter threatens to take his title. Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote this sentimental children's classic in 1886, and it set a fashion for velvet suits.
Readers who love old-fashioned, warm stories about goodness changing a cold heart will find it a comfort.
Practical and clear-cut; an easy read.
