Gustav von Aschenbach is a celebrated writer in Munich, middle-aged and stiff with self-discipline. Suffering from a creative block, he sets out on a trip and chooses Venice. At his hotel on the Lido, he sees Tadzio, a Polish adolescent of striking beauty, and starts to watch him. His feelings grow into a destructive devotion that he never expresses openly, and he refuses to leave even as signs mount that a cholera epidemic is being concealed. Thomas Mann treats the story with irony and classical references, and it examines the clash between reason and passion.
A good short classic for readers of psychological fiction. You can finish it in an evening, and it will stay on your mind.
Deep, inward-looking, contemplative and thought-provoking; a moderate read.
