About the book

Tonio Kröger is the son of a merchant family in a northern German town, a dreamy boy who writes poetry, loves the blond and cheerful Hans Hansen, and feels set apart from everyday people. As an adult he becomes a writer, lives among bohemian artists in Munich and travels to Denmark, where he revisits his hometown. Thomas Mann uses his story to examine the tension between the artist and the bourgeois world: art demands detachment, but the writer also longs for ordinary life and feeling. The novella is lyrical and ironic by turns.

Readers who want a compact introduction to Mann's central theme will find it here. It is also a fit for anyone who has felt like an outsider and wants to understand why.
