Catherine Ravenscroft, a successful television documentary maker, finds a novel on her bedside table that she did not buy. As she reads The Perfect Stranger, she realizes that it describes a secret from her past that she has told no one, and that someone has written it into a book. She discovers that the author is Stephen Brigstocke, a retired teacher who is seeking revenge for a loss, and she is forced to face what really happened. Chapters alternate between Catherine and Stephen.
