About the book

Egor, a painter, comes to stay at the Moscu family's country estate. He is drawn to Sanda, one of the daughters, but a stranger presence haunts the house: Christina, linked to the family's dead and to the peasant violence of 1907. As nights pass, the household's fears about a vampire-like revenant and about the past spill into the present, and Egor's attraction to the real and the unreal blurs.

Mircea Eliade's 1936 novella blends Romanian folklore, gothic mood and erotic tension. It is a good read for fans of fantastic literature and of Eliade's interest in myth and the sacred.
