Farmer Brown's ducks live under the rule of a farmer who tells them what to do, and Duck, who is tired of the work, decides things could be better if he were in charge. He starts by taking the election at the farm, wins, and soon discovers that a leader has to deal with paperwork, speeches and problems. Doreen Cronin's story, illustrated by Betsy Lewin, takes a gentle jab at campaign slogans and politics and ends with Duck choosing a new goal.
Parents and teachers looking for a light way to introduce elections, voting and responsibility will find it handy. Children get plenty of jokes, and adults catch the wry asides about political ambition.
Practical, outward-looking, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
