Farmer Brown leaves his city-slicker brother, Bob, in charge of the farm while he goes on vacation. He leaves a set of instructions for the chores, but Duck manages to intercept the pen. Instead of the Farmer’s actual rules, Duck writes new notes that command Bob to provide the animals with luxury treatments. The cows get pizza, the pigs receive a bubble bath, and the sheep watch a movie while snacking on popcorn. Bob follows these written orders literally, unaware that the animals are orchestrating their own vacation.
Preschoolers and early elementary students read this book for its visual comedy and the repetition of animal sounds. The story highlights the contrast between what an authority figure expects and what happens when those in charge are easily fooled. Readers walk away with a sense of mischief and a realization that small creatures can exert control through cleverness. It serves as a humorous example of how written instructions can be manipulated to turn a standard routine into a chaotic celebration.
Practical, outward-looking, growth-minded, clear-cut and escapist; an easy read.
